Collapse
By Ben Fetterman
It’s amazing how quiet it is
When one’s world falls apart around them.
You would think that someone’s entire world being destroyed
Would be loud and messy,
And everyone would noticed.
And sometimes it is.
But often it’s hidden in a slowly fading smile,
Excusing one’s self to the bathroom to regain their composure.
And the thing that causes this collapse?
It might be a throwaway comment,
An ignored moment of excitement,
A missed silent plea for help,
A realization that another’s interest that seemed so real before is feigned.
Suddenly everything rings hollow,
As the sudden sucker punch hits,
And the world they had come to know and love
Suddenly,
Silently,
Collapses
Wow.
I love the imagery.
